The Mayor shall see that the ordinances of the Town are faithfully executed and shall be the chief executive officer and the head of the administrative branch of the Town government (Town Charter, Article IV, Section 401).
About Mayor Carey
Mayor Lenford Carey is a Federal retiree with over 30 years working for the Department of Agriculture as a communications director, a forester, a program analyst, a science writer, and a speechwriter. He has also been a forestry association executive and marketer.

Mayor Carey grew up in a small town in upstate New York, and received a Bachelor of Science from the SUNY College of Forestry in Syracuse. After graduate study and military service, he settled in the Washington area in 1972. He and his family have lived on Van Buren Street in University Park since 2004. They are members of the University Park Civic Association.
First elected to the Council in 2009, Mayor Carey supports effective and responsive government, improved tree and park maintenance, strong local schools, and active engagement with neighboring communities to clean up the stream and shape development along the Route 1 corridor.
