[ARCHIVED] UPPD Completes ABLE Training

Town Hall exterior

The University Park Police Department is pleased to announce that all sworn officers of the University Park Police Department have completed 8 hours of Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) Training.  The University Park Police is one of the first municipal police agencies in Prince George’s County to complete the ABLE training and joins 60 other law enforcement agencies from across the United States and Canada.

The ABLE certification is a rigorous process that requires a departmental commitment to 10 ABLE standards, letters of support from elected officials and community stakeholders.  University Park Police completed the process earlier this year. ABLE was developed by Georgetown Law Innovative Policing Program, in collaboration with global law firm Sheppard Mullin LLP, which includes evidence-based and field-tested peer intervention strategies.  The initial ABLE certification and 8-hour course of instruction was received at no cost to the department.  ABLE is an excellent opportunity for departments to become a part of the nationwide effort to reimagine policing and will assist in building community confidence and trust.
