[ARCHIVED] Lock it Up!

Man holding car keys in his hand

University Park has experienced a rash of theft from autos over the past week.  Theft from auto is strictly a crime of opportunity that can be prevented if you take away the opportunity. When you park your vehicle, make sure you lock the doors and remove all valuables.  Recently, many of the vehicles that have been targeted have been left unlocked and parked on the street.  Thieves are bold and will seize the opportunity if they notice valuables laying on the seat of a vehicle.  They are not bound by time.  They will strike during the day and at night.  It is very important that if you see someone walking through University Park checking vehicle door handles that you call 911.

At night, please leave your porch light on so you and your neighbor can see and report suspicious activity.  This will also help the University Park Police during their patrols at night.  Before going to bed, make sure you didn’t leave your keys inside of your vehicle and be sure to activate your vehicle alarm.

The University Park Police encourages you to take the precautions listed below to help ensure your vehicle is not targeted by thieves:

Keep Your Valuables Out of Sight

The best way to prevent theft from your vehicle is to always keep valuables out of sight. Never leave extra vehicle keys, cell phones, briefcases, or electronic devices (cell phones, handicap placards, laptop computers, etc.) in your car in plain view. Take these items with you, or secure them—all the time, every time.

Secure Your GPS Device

While many GPS devices are mounted in the dashboard of the vehicle, the University Park Police encourages anyone who uses a portable GPS device to take it with you, along with any other items of value, when you park the car.

Use Your Trunk

If your car has a trunk, use it. Put valuables in there or in a locked glove compartment. The University Park Police does not recommend hiding items under seats, but it is better than leaving them in plain view.

Remove Your Radio Face Plate

If you can unfasten your sound system and take it with you, or lock it in your trunk, do so. And do the same with your CDs and tapes.

Lock It Up

Also, keep your car doors and windows locked - all the time!

Remember, take the time to secure your valuables. Keep it safe, Keep it with you
