Dear University Park residents, friends and neighbors,
This has been a difficult and painful week in University Park. The Council and I share your grief and shock over the arrest of the previous mayor. We are deeply saddened that our Town is in the news for such a tragic reason. Mr. Biermann has been denied bond and will remain in custody pending a hearing on Nov. 27. While we wait for the judicial process to establish the truth of what happened, we want to make it known that University Park stands in support of the victims of crimes of this nature.
Another disturbing event took place in town this past week when an unleashed dog attacked a resident’s leashed dog in the vicinity of Pineway and Beechwood. Fortunately, neighbors and our Town Police sprang into action to protect the injured dog and the traumatized dog owner. We want to express much appreciation to the brave residents who came to the rescue without consideration of their own risks.
Acting Police Chief Graddy has wisely requested that no one directly contact the owner of the attacking dog about this incident. We also advise residents to use caution when in this vicinity. We are deeply concerned by this incident and are committed to ensuring our residents feel safe when walking in our community. We will work with our Police Department and Code Enforcement Officer to identify solutions to prevent future incidents and to enforce our leash law to the fullest extent possible.
If you have any direct observations concerning this or a similar event, consider filing an individual complaint to the Prince Georges County Animal Services Division.
We will not let these terrible incidents define us. We’re a wonderful community and we look out for each other.
With care and concern,
Laurie Morrissey, Mayor, and Town Councilmembers Mary Gathercole, Ralph Dubayah, Grant Godfrey, Casey Kelby, David McGaughey, Nat Morgan, and William Sweet
