[ARCHIVED] UP Goes Purple!

Purple Suicide and Opioid Prevention flyer with ribbon

To participate in this campaign, all you need to do is display purple lights on your home. Purple string lights or porch lights will let your neighbors know you are committed to spreading awareness about this important campaign.

So, what is it? Across Maryland, many communities are flooded in purple lights, encouraged by the Maryland Municipal League and the Herren Project, to promote awareness about opioid and substance abuse prevention. Some communities also use this month to raise awareness about suicide prevention.

On July 18th, the Council adopted a formal resolution to recognize each September as “University Park Goes Purple” in order to empower our community with resources and to educate our youth on these important issues. You will see banners and signs around town highlighting this month’s campaign and signs promoting the new, national 9-8-8 Suicide Help Line. If you or someone you know is combatting thoughts of suicide, this new 9-8-8 number (like 9-1-1) has resources to provide immediate help to people in crisis. Similarly, in Maryland, you can call 2-1-1 for mental help resources, including assistance combatting substance abuse. Show your support for these people we care about.
