Town Election Changes Due to Coronavirus (COVID-19)

On Wednesday, March 25, during the Special Session meeting, Council approved postponing the Town election to Friday, May 29 and approved a vote-by-mail election due to the Coronavirus. The Supervisor of Elections Stephanie Herold, Town Clerk Andrea Marcavitch and Town Attorney Suellen Ferguson met via conference call last week to review the Town Charter and to discuss options for the upcoming Town election. The safety and well-being of residents and election officials are a top priority and it was recommended that the Town conduct a vote-by-mail election, also known as absentee voting. Upon further discussion, it was determined that postponing the election date to the end of May would help get the information out to residents notifying them of the changes and would also give more time for election officials to prepare for the election, including making arrangements for the preparation and mailing of the ballots. An election can be held at any time in May according to Section 504 of the Town Charter.

A ballot will be mailed to every registered voter in University Park with detailed instructions, self-sealing envelopes and a stamped return envelope. Ballots can be returned via mail or drop box. An exterior, locked drop box will be located at Town Hall. All ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day to be counted. Residents should expect to receive a ballot in the mail during the second week of May - starting around May 11.
