Overview

The public library
University Park is an active and diverse community that offers many options for residents to stay involved. Within and adjacent to the town are a number of churches and houses of worship. Two shopping malls and a shopping center, a public library, a variety of restaurants, and the facilities of the University of Maryland are all close by.

Residents actively participate in a number of civic, social, and recreation groups throughout the year. One of these organizations is the University Park Civic Association. This group sponsors such events as the Town-wide Yard Sale, the Halloween Party and Parade, and annual stream clean-up, a July 4th Parade and Picnic, and Arts in the Park series, and a December Holiday Potluck.

Other groups include : The Woman's Club, Boys and Girls Scout troops, and a Boys and Girls Club which organizes soccer, t-ball, softball, baseball, and basketball teams for children of all ages, and an "informal" soccer team. Town residents also hold an annual garden tour, and a holiday house tour.

The Town also offers a "Welcome Wagon" service for new residents, but we still need some volunteers to help out. We especially need people from Wards 5, 6 & 7 to assist with this program. Please call Amy if this is something you'd like to get involved with.

Bugs Update
GYPSY MOTHS : Have you seen a woman wandering down your street looking in your yard with binoculars? Chances are, it is Amy, town secretary, and honorary gypsy moth spy! We are trying to survey the Town to make sure that are trees are safe from these annoying little pests. As much as Amy enjoys this, she'd love to have some help with any residents that enjoy getting out, and looking at trees! So far, the surveys have turned up no egg masses, but it would be great to conduct a few more. Please let Amy know if this is something you'd like to help with.

MOSQUITOS: Before you know it, spring will be here, and mosquitos will again be swarming through town. It is of the utmost importance that residents begin to check their yards for potential breeding sites. Anywhere water can collect, from a bottle cap, that can hold 10 mosquito larvae, to a birdbath, where thousands can collect, need to be monitored and emptied regualarly.
Tiger mosquitos are a breed that is particularly nasty. Unlike your standard mosquito that primarily bites at dawn or dusk, Tigers bite all day long. They also will not fly away when you swat at them, they'll continue to try and bite you, being very aggressive. You'll know it's a Tiger mosquito if you see it exhibit this behavior, and has black and white stripes.
Amy is willing to come out and check your yard for potential breeding sites, but because she is only one person, if there are others who would be interested in helping, she'd welcome the assistance. Also, please keep your eyes out for breeding areas in the park, and on the streets. If you find some, let us know. Thanks for your help, and vigilence in keeping this pest at a minimum in Town.
Tips to minimize mosquitos:

  • Remove standing water from items in your yard.
  • Clean gutters at least twice a year.
  • Keep wading pools turned over, but check top for water.
  • Don't keep tires in yard! These are PERFECT for breeding thousands of mosquitos!
