A Message From The Chief

Chief Wynnyk Welcome to the University Park Police webpage. The UPPD consists of 8 sworn officers housed in the University Park Town Hall. The members of this police department, both individually and as a team, work together to promote our mission to provide professional police services for a diverse community. We do this in concert with the citizens of University Park.

Looking forward to the new set of challenges associated with policing our future, together we will strive to keep our town a wonderful place to live for generations to come. I hope you find the information on this new and dynamic site informative.

Police Communication

911- Emergencies: Police, Fire, Medical. Crimes in progress of, robbery, assault, domestic disputes, breaking and entering, theft, weapons, illicit drug use, destruction of property, and auto accidents with injury are just some examples of emergencies that the 911 line is designed for. Use it when necessary.

County Dispatch# (301-352-1200) - This is also a non-emergency number, for reporting criminal activity. This number will put you in touch with a Prince George’s County operator that will forward your information to the dispatch center for the radio call assignment. You may ask for a UP officer to respond, and they will if they are available and not tied up on another call. If the UP officer is not available a PGPD officer will respond. PGPD do serve as back up officers to the UPPD and assist in many emergency situations.

UPPD Phone #(301- 277-0050) – This is a number made available for general business, administrative functions, contact with staff during working hours, leaving non-emergency messages, house check information, parking issues, to speak with the Chief, and general information from the UPPD.

UPPD Cell Phone # (240-375-1077) – This number has been made available to the public for the times when an officer is out on patrol, not in the station and other staff is not in the station. It is also a non-emergency number that can put you in touch with the on-duty officer. If the officer is involved with a police matter, and does not answer the phone, please leave a message with your name and number.

Patrol Functions

The patrol function of the University Park Police Department is to answer all calls for service and requests for assistance. These services range from reports of suspicious activity, medical help, persons locked out of their vehicles and safety advice.

Every University Park officer is trained and certified by the Maryland Police Training Commission and sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution, Maryland Criminal and Traffic Laws, Prince George’s County Code, and the University Park Town Code, Rules and Regulations. Officers respond to crimes in progress, investigate motor vehicle accidents, conduct preliminary investigations of crimes that have been committed and complete written reports and documents as required.

The officers patrol a community of over 900 homes, eleven miles of roadway, 30 plus acres of park land, playgrounds, tennis courts, commuter roads, an elementary school and two churches.

The Town of University Park is diligently patrolled by Vehicular Patrol, Foot Patrol and Bicycle Patrol 24 hours a day. The primary objective is ensuring the general well-being and safety of all members of our community. Each officer is a true member of this community and is approachable, regardless of the need or concern.

The UPPD strives to acquire, maintain, and allocate material and personnel resources that are responsive to community needs and operational requirements.

Residents intending to be out of Town are encouraged to make use of the Police Department's program of examining the physical security of vacant residences. Speak directly to an officer at least 48 hours before you plan to be away to request this added protection.

UPPD develops and devises prevention and enforcement strategies and programs that reduce crime thereby decreasing fear and increasing confidence in the police department.
